Wisdom teeth—typically a total of four—usually erupt between the ages of 17–25. Because they are located at the very back of the jaw, they can be difficult to clean. Therefore, if proper oral hygiene is not maintained, they may increase the risk of cavities and gum problems.
Wisdom teeth do not always erupt smoothly in every individual. Teeth that are not positioned properly or remain impacted may put pressure on surrounding teeth, causing pain, infection, and in some cases crowding.
In such cases, following clinical and radiographic evaluation, your dentist may recommend extraction. Early intervention helps prevent more serious issues in the future.
